C V Raman was born on 7 November 1888 in Thiruvanaikaval, Chennai. His full name was Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman.
Raman is known for his experiments on the scattering of light and the discovery of the Raman Effect.
Raman was President of the 16th session of the Indian Science Congress of 1929.
Raman had won many prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize (1930), Bharat Ratna (1954) and Lenin Peace Prize (1957). He was also selected as a member of the Royal Society in 1924.
Raman also made some notable contributions to the fields of human vision, the optics of colloids, and electrical and magnetic anisotropy.
