Assessment in 3C curriculum :

Assessment is the gathering and analysis of information about student performance. It identifies what students know, understand, can do and feel at different stages in the learning process.

Learners Constructing Meaning

Assessment is integral to all teaching and learning. Thoughtfully and effectively guiding students through the six essential elements of learning:-

The displaying of Character,
The understanding of Concepts
The acquisition of knowledge,
The mastering of Competence,
The development of Content,
And the decision to take responsible Action.

Everyone concerned with assessment – students, teachers, parents, administrators, and board members – must have a clear understanding of the reasons for the assessment, what is being assessed, the criteria for success, and the method by which the assessment is made.

The 3C describes the taught curriculum as the written curriculum in action. Using the written curriculum, and in collaboration with colleagues and students, the teacher generates questions which guide structured inquiry and instruction.
These questions address the eight key concepts which help lead to productive lines of inquiry.
Assessment focuses on the quality of student learning during the process of inquiry and instruction and on the quality of the products of that learning.

Assessment is, therefore, integral to the taught curriculum. It is the means by which we analyze student learning and the effectiveness of our teaching and acts as a foundation on which to base our future planning and practice. It is central to our goal of guiding the student, from novice to expert, through the learning process.

The assessment component in the school’s curriculum can itself be subdivided into three closely related areas:

  • Assessing – How we discover what the students know and have learned.
  • Recording – How we choose to collect and analyze data.
  • Reporting – How we choose to communicate information

Through the Edify,  teachers strive to provide the opportunity for students to construct meaning primarily through structured inquiry. This is accomplished by emphasizing the connections between subject-specific knowledge and itprovides a focus for inquiry, while literacy and numeracy provide the tools.

Feedback should be given on student progress and performance in each of these areas.

Additionally, feedback should be provided on the attributes listed in the 3C Profile:

This profile serves to increase the student’s awarenessof, and sensitivity to, the experiences of others beyond the local or national community, thus promoting an understanding that there is a commonality of human experience.

At Edify School, we assess performance and progress in all  Inquiry and in addition stand alone skills that may be taught in Physical Education, the Arts,

Language, Mathematics, and the 3C Profile.

We also continue to incorporate student attitudes and attributes to everyday learning.

Students regularly assess their own work and reflect on their own learning process. Teachers support the students in assessing their own work by providing assessment criteria’s. Students go through all the assessment steps through the Pre-Assessment, Formative Assessment and Summative Assessment.

Parent teacher meetings are held regularly in which the teachers show through different mediums how the students perform and behave in the class and how the students have progressed over a time period and the parents too provide their perspective.

Students maintain what they consider their best work collectively in a student’s portfolio. This helps the students self-assess their performance and learning. The portfolio is shared by the students with their parents in a Student-Led Conference. This conference allows the students to play an active role in reporting their progress to their parents. The students also put – up an Exhibition in which they showcase their Inquiry Module which also shows the action they would take and it focuses on the global issues too.

Educational opportunities away from the classroom

Hobbies are a way of gaining new knowledge and a means for emotional and artistic outlet. Hobbies keep the minds and hands of children active. Through participation in various creative arts, performance arts and visual arts the students of Edify Schools grow aesthetically sensitive, imaginative, creative and also improve upon their communications skills.

Edify School educational tours provide valuable educational opportunities away from the classroom, textbooks and other tools which are used normally in school. Students on Educational Tours have the opportunity to learn while having fun and that too in a more informal environment. During Educational Tours, the facilitators have a chance to have hands-on teaching and knowledge sharing time with the students, for example an outing to a science center or historical museum where the students are excited to learn about things from these new sights.

It is an ideal situation where students and teachers can bond outside the classroom and where new educational environments and experiences are possible. Students have the opportunity to observe many things that are not available at school, including exotic wildlife, rare plants and maybe even the stars if the Educational Tours is to a planetarium. The Educational Tours are discussed beforehand because it allows students to know what they will experience during their time away from school.

Getting away from the everyday atmosphere of the classroom gives students an opportunity to spend time with each other in a new environment. They are able to connect on more of a personal level without the structure of the normal school day. Students are able to spend much of the educational tour days in small groups, observing, chatting and learning about each other. Having an Educational Tour allows students to bond with classmates they don’t know very well. Part of how students benefit from educational tours is by gaining new perspectives on the world. This is especially true for more extensive Educational Tours where students travel farther away from home. By coming into direct contact with a different environment or even a new culture or language, students of Edify Schools can understand their place better in the community and develop openness to differences in others.

The Committees are an integral part of school dynamics. Committees ensure smooth conduct of the school calendar. Committees ensure participation as well as commitment towards the roles and responsibilities in ensuring smooth functioning of different areas.
